Many human beings are susceptible to a particular disease characterized by a tendency to accumulate and exhibit excess “stuff.” This affliction is called “Stuff-itis,” and it tends to spread more rampantly during the Christmas season. Its symptoms may include stockpiling a massive number of gifts; purchasing a myriad of bling, sparkle, and decor that will be displayed only for a month; accepting another huge stockpile of things; accruing more linens and dishes; and, filling one’s pantry and refrigerator to the brim.
But then again, it’s the holiday season. The one time of the year that all this makes sense, and it is absolutely acceptable to fall victim to the Stuff-itis bug.
As the New Year rolls in and the Yuletide winds down, “Stuff-itis” tends to leave one completely helpless and perplexed as to how all that stuff has suddenly overtaken one’s home and one’s life. It’s not as scary as it may seem. You just need to take a deep breath and schedule a day for putting stuff away. If you can, enlist some help to make this day easier and fun. Before you get around to figuring out those 2023 resolutions, ease yourself into normal by decluttering your home.
Take down and put away the decor
Your decor is precious and has brought you and your family, sheer joy during the holidays. So, pack them away with TLC in strong, preferably moisture-proof, containers. Label your boxes to make your life easier when you need to take them out again. Put “FRAGILE” on boxes holding delicate items.
Wash the holiday linens and pack away the Christmas tableware
Put the laundered linens in plastic bags to prepare them for storage. If the Christmas dishes and pans don’t have their own space in your cabinets, pack them carefully into boxes that you can keep elsewhere. Make sure your dishes are protected and you fill in the gaps with packing material, so they don’t shift when they’re moved. Towels and linens make good shock absorbers too!
Eat the food or give away what won’t last
If you can’t refrigerate or freeze what’s left of the Noche Buena, or the delicious vittles you got as gifts, then by all means give them away to someone you know will enjoy them.
As for the presents…
Segregate gifts into YES! (You love them and plan to use them.), UMMM… (You’re undecided.), and SORRY, NO. (You don’t need them, know you won’t use them, or already have them.) Make sure your entire family does this as well. Pack the “UMMMs” and “SORRY, NOs” into containers that you can store away till you decide what to do with each item. Store them safely, and properly label the boxes. Don’t let them pile up and clutter up your home and extra rooms.
You’re almost done! Now that everything you want to keep is in its perfect place and the rest packed into containers, you can bring these containers over to Loc&Stor 24/7 Secure Self-Storage to be safely stored, well-protected, and out of your way until you need them again.
Aside from the Christmas décor, holiday kitchenware and linens why not include winter clothes, luggage, sports equipment, memorabilia, and other personal items that you don’t need on a regular basis? This is a much more practical, and prettier, option than filling the––probably already filled––guest room, garage, or home office with towers of cartons and plastic bins.
